Couples Therapy

An embodied relational approach

We often say it "takes two to tango," but in a relationship, that dance involves two nervous systems, two histories, and two sets of physical impulses constantly reacting to one another. Embodied Relational Therapy (ERT) for couples goes beyond just talking. While we certainly use our voices, we also look at the "unspoken" language - the way we bear weight, take up space, or instinctively pull back. By using simple exercises and a bit of play, we illuminate the invisible patterns that keep you feeling stuck. The Body Matters Our nervous systems are wired for two things: connection and protection. Often, the "arguments" we have are actually our bodies trying to stay safe. In our sessions, we explore: The "Protection Racket": How we sometimes trade our true selves for a false sense of security. Rediscovering "Me": Who am I when I’m with you? How do I feel in my own skin in your presence? Rediscovering "You": Stepping back just enough to see your partner with curiosity instead of judgment. The Vital Spark: Exploring what squashes our life force and what actually fuels our desire and play. The "Breakdown" as a Breakthrough In every relationship, there is a seed of potential breakdown. It can feel scary, but I see it as a healthy signal—the relationship is trying to "force open" some space because you’ve become too entangled to relate well. This doesn’t necessarily mean a "break up." Often, it’s an invitation to find your own feet again, so you can bring a more authentic, vibrant version of yourself back to the relationship. The Details I offer a quiet, supportive space in Brighton to explore these dynamics. Frequency: Weekly or bi-monthly sessions. Support: Occasionally, I may suggest individual therapy alongside our work to help you dive deeper into your own patterns. Fee: £90 per hour. Like tending a garden, I believe relationships can’t be forced into blooming. We simply clear the weeds, nourish the soil, and see what wants to grow.
