Therapy for the Whole Self

“We are like islands in the sea. Separate on the surface but connected in the deep.” – William James

We cannot leave our physical selves at the door when we enter the consulting room.

Having practiced and taught yoga, meditation, and bodywork since the mid-90s, I have long been fascinated by how the body and mind reflect one another. They are not separate entities, but a single, continuous organism. Our nervous systems are wired for connection, yet they also carry deep patterns designed to pull us back toward safety and self-preservation.

Many of the challenges that bring us to therapy arise from this internal tug-of-war. We can become stuck in habitual ways of relating to the world until we no longer feel comfortable within our own skin.

Embodied Relational Therapy

This 'stuckness' is at the heart of Embodied Relational Therapy (ERT), an approach I have practiced and taught for many years alongside its founder, Nick Totton.

ERT is holistic and recognises that our earliest experiences are held in our physical selves - not as memories of the past, but as living patterns in the present. By attending to the breath, the body, and the unfolding relational 'aliveness' in the consulting room, we create the conditions for these patterns to shift.
